Cefepime and Sulbactam injection is a potent “Beta-lactam/Beta-lactamase inhibitor” combination antibiotic. It is used to treat severe, multi-drug resistant bacterial infections that standard antibiotics can no longer handle.Â
How the Combination Works
This pairing is designed to defeat bacterial resistance:
-
- Cefepime: A 4th-generation cephalosporin that kills bacteria by preventing them from building their cell walls.
- Sulbactam: A “resistance-breaker.” It stops bacteria from producing enzymes (beta-lactamases) that would otherwise destroy the Cefepime, making the treatment much more effective.
Common Uses (Indications)
Doctors typically reserve this combination for serious infections in hospital settings:Â
- Intra-abdominal Infections: Complex infections of the stomach or intestines.
- Respiratory Infections: Severe nosocomial (hospital-acquired) pneumonia.
- Urinary Tract: Complicated UTIs and kidney infections (pyelonephritis).
- Skin & Soft Tissue: Severe infected wounds or cellulitis.
- Febrile Neutropenia: Used as an initial treatment for patients with low white blood cell counts who develop a fever.
