Cefepime and Tazobactam injection is a high-potency combination antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, particularly those caused by organisms that have developed resistance to multiple other drugs.
Therapeutic Mechanism
This combination works through two distinct actions:
- Cefepime (4th Gen Cephalosporin): A broad-spectrum antibiotic that kills bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell walls.
- Tazobactam (Beta-lactamase Inhibitor): This component “breaks” the bacterial resistance by blocking enzymes (beta-lactamases) that would normally deactivate Cefepime, thus extending its effectiveness.Â
Common Uses (Indications)
It is primarily used in hospital settings for moderate to severe infections, including:Â
- Respiratory Infections: Severe pneumonia (including hospital-acquired) and bronchitis.
- Urinary Tract: Complicated UTIs and kidney infections (pyelonephritis).
- Intra-abdominal: Infections within the abdominal cavity like peritonitis.
- Blood & Systemic: Septicaemia (bloodstream infections) and febrile neutropenia (fever in patients with very low white blood cell counts).
