Levofloxacin is a potent, broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolone class. It is a more refined and stronger version of Ofloxacin, used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections.
Primary Uses
It is highly effective against bacteria in the:
- Respiratory System: Sinusitis, acute worsening of chronic bronchitis, and community-acquired pneumonia.
- Urinary Tract: Complicated kidney infections (pyelonephritis) and bladder infections.
- Skin: Cellulitis, abscesses, and complicated skin structure infections.
- Prostate: Chronic bacterial prostatitis.
How to Take It
- Dosage: Usually taken as one tablet once daily (either 250mg, 500mg, or 750mg).
- Timing: It can be taken with or without food. However, it is best to take it at the same time each day to maintain consistent levels in your blood.
- Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids (water) while taking this medicine to ensure your kidneys function properly.
- Avoid Interference: Do not take antacids, iron supplements, or multivitamins containing zinc within 2 hours before or after your dose, as they can stop the medicine from working.Â
Key Precautions & Side Effects
- Tendon Warning: Similar to Ciprofloxacin, there is a risk of tendon inflammation or rupture. Avoid heavy exercise and notify your doctor if you feel sudden pain in your ankles, knees, or shoulders.
- Nerve Damage: It can occasionally cause peripheral neuropathy (tingling or numbness in hands/feet).
- Sun Sensitivity: Your skin may become more sensitive to sunlight (photosensitivity); use sunscreen or stay in the shade.
- Mental Health: In rare cases, it may cause confusion, anxiety, or sleep disturbances.
