Cefpirome is a highly potent, fourth-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat severe, life-threatening bacterial infections. It is particularly valued in hospital settings for its ability to target multi-drug resistant bacteria that have become insensitive to earlier generations of antibiotics.
Medical Indications
Cefpirome is reserved for complex infections, often when the exact cause is not yet known (empiric therapy) or for patients with weakened immune systems:
-
- Severe Respiratory Infections: Including hospital-acquired pneumonia.
- Septicaemia: Life-threatening infections of the bloodstream.
- Febrile Neutropenia: Fever in cancer patients with dangerously low white blood cell counts.
- Complicated Urinary Tract Infections: Infections that have spread to the kidneys.
- Skin & Soft Tissue Infections: Severe infected wounds or cellulitis.Â
Mechanism of Action
Cefpirome is a bactericidal agent, meaning it directly kills bacteria. It works by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which inhibits the final step of building the bacterial cell wall. Without a stable wall, the bacteria swell and eventually burst (lysis). Its unique zwitterionic structure allows it to penetrate the outer membranes of Gram-negative bacteria much faster than older drugs.
